Why is the power off in only part of my house?
If some rooms have power and others don’t, a safety switch (RCD) or circuit breaker has most likely tripped. Something on that circuit, often an appliance or moisture, caused a fault, and the switch cut the power to protect you.
Work through these steps:
- Check the street. If neighbours are out too, it’s a network outage. Check your line’s company’s outage map rather than calling an electrician.
- Open your switchboard. Look for a switch sitting in the middle or off position.
- Unplug everything on the affected rooms, then flick that switch back on.
- Plug items back in one at a time. If it trips when one goes in, that appliance is the problem.
- If it trips with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring. Leave it off and book fault finding.
Don’t keep resetting a switch that trips straight away. Each reset puts power back into a fault.
Do you need an emergency electrician in Takanini?
You need an electrician urgently if there’s a burning smell, visible sparks, a hot switch or socket, a shock from a tap or appliance, or a main switch that won’t stay on. Anything else can usually wait for a booked visit.
Call now | Can usually be booked |
Burning smell or smoke from a fitting or the switchboard | One power point not working |
Sparks when plugging in or switching on | A downlight that has died |
Switch, socket or cord hot to touch | Needing more power points |
Tingle or shock from a tap, appliance or metal fitting | Smoke alarm chirping |
Main switch trips straight away every time | Planned switchboard upgrade |
While you wait:
- If you smell burning, turn off the main switch, but only if you can reach it safely. If there are flames, call 111.
- Keep everyone away from the fitting or appliance involved.
- Call us on 022 041 4630 and describe what you’re seeing. Photos help.
“We take urgent calls in the evenings and weekends 24/7”.
Common electrical problems in Takanini homes
Many Takanini homes were built in the last 20 years, so the problems here are often different from those in older suburbs. They’re usually about capacity and fittings rather than worn-out wiring.
Problem | Likely cause | How we fix it |
Downlights flicker, buzz or keep dying | Cheap builder-grade LEDs or a non-LED dimmer | Replace with quality fittings and an LED-rated dimmer |
No space on the switchboard | Board sized only for the original build | Add a sub-board or upgrade the switchboard |
Power points in the wrong places | Builder-standard layout | Add outlets, including USB and outdoor power |
Outdoor lights fail after rain | Fittings not rated for weather | Fit sealed, outdoor-rated fittings |
Ceiling fan wobbles or hums | Poor mounting or an incompatible controller | Refit on a proper bracket with a matched controller |
Switch or socket feels loose | Worn mechanism or loose terminals | Replace the switch or socket and re-terminate the wiring |
Recognise one of these? Send us a photo on 022 041 4630. We can often tell you what’s involved before we visit.

What is a safety switch and do I need one?
A safety switch, also called an RCD (residual current device), cuts power within a fraction of a second if it detects electricity leaking to earth, for example through a person. It’s the main protection against a fatal electric shock.
Most homes built in the last 20 years have them, but not always on every circuit. If your switchboard has old ceramic fuses, or only one safety switch for the whole house, it’s worth having it checked. We test your existing RCDs and add more where they’re needed.
Can my switchboard handle an EV charger or heat pump?
Often yes, but not always. A home EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit, and many newer Takanini homes have switchboards with no spare space. Before quoting, we check three things:
- Space on the board for a new circuit breaker and safety switch
- Your supply capacity, so the charger doesn’t overload the house when the oven and heat pump are also running
- The cable run from the board to where you park
If the board is full, a sub-board is usually cheaper than replacing the whole switchboard. We’ll explain both options.
How much does an electrician cost in Takanini?
The cost depends on labour time, materials, and whether the fault is known or still has to be found. We give a fixed price for defined jobs, such as installing lights, power points or an EV charger. Fault finding is charged by time, because the cause isn’t known until it’s found.
Affordable work comes from getting it right the first time. That means finding the actual cause rather than just resetting a switch, and quoting the whole job up front so there are no surprises. Sending photos when you enquire often lets us give you a firmer price before we arrive.

How do you know an electrician is properly licensed?
Check their name on the Electrical Workers Registration Board’s public register. It’s free and takes a minute. A licensed electrician should also give you:
- A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for the electrical work they’ve done
- An Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) once the work is connected and safe to use
Keep both. Insurers may ask for them after a claim, and they’re often requested when you sell.
